The OSM way-bag nearly vertex-closes at Whakapapa (~120 m between start and end); a closer was not invented.

  • Rapidly changing extreme alpine weather: warm and sunny to cold, wet, and high winds; wind-chill can be severe (same DOC page, checked 2026-08-24).
  • Exposed, difficult, uneven terrain; extra caution on the steep, slippery descent from Emerald Lakes into Oturere Valley (same page, checked 2026-08-24).
  • Winter (May–late October) is not a Great Walk: snow, ice, avalanche terrain, and sub-zero temperatures — alpine skills required (same page, checked 2026-08-24).
