Hazards
- Active volcanic terrain: the Crossing passes through volcanic hazard zones — even when the track is open, volcanic risk is present. Te Maari, Red Crater and Ngāuruhoe have been active within the last 100 years; Te Maari erupted in 2012. - Tongariro fires 2025: two fires burned significant areas around the start of the Crossing. Hapū Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro have placed a 10-year restorative rāhui over the affected area — stay on the tracks (same page, checked 2026-08-25).
- Rapid extreme alpine weather in any season: very cold temperatures, strong wind, heavy rain, poor visibility; snow can fall at any time of year. Not recommended for children under 10 (same page, checked 2026-08-25).
- Loose volcanic scree on the steep descent from Red Crater toward Ngā Rotopounamu/Emerald Lakes is a major slip hazard (same page, checked 2026-08-25).
- Geothermal ground near the emerald lakes: stay on the marked track; do not approach steam vents or enter the lakes (same page, checked 2026-08-25).
