New Zealand Great Walks compared: Kepler, Milford & Routeburn (+ Tongariro)

The New Zealand multi-day and alpine trails in our catalog — three Great Walks we hold (Kepler Track, Milford Track, Routeburn Track) plus Tongariro Northern Circuit and the Tongariro Alpine Crossing day-hike. This is not a ranking of all ten Great Walks, and we do not hold Abel Tasman, Heaphy, or the rest of that set. Country: New Zealand.

Key hazard
  • Exposed alpine section between Luxmore Hut and Iris Burn Hut; weather can change quickly and DOC may close that section or use a bad-weather route when avalanche hazard is present (https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/kepler-track/, checked 2026-08-24).
  • No reliable drinking water on the alpine section until Iris Burn Hut — fill at Luxmore Hut (same DOC page, checked 2026-08-24).
  • Flooding and rapid weather: the Milford Track is not an all-weather track. The Clinton and Arthur valleys become impassable in heavy rain; landslides and river rises are routine (https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/milford-track/, checked 2026-08-25).
  • Exposed alpine section over Omanui/McKinnon Pass (DOC shelter 1,154 m): steep, slippery, rough, and muddy; not recommended for children under 10 (same page, checked 2026-08-25).
  • Rapid weather and very high rainfall (up to 9,000 mm/year): cold, snow, strong winds, and heavy rain can occur in any season (https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/fiordland/places/fiordland-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/routeburn-track/, checked 2026-08-25).
  • Steep drop-offs along sections of the whole track; some sections are steep and rough. Not recommended for children under 10 (same page, checked 2026-08-25).
  • Active volcanic region: the circuit passes through volcanic hazard zones — even when the track is open, volcanic risk is present. Monitoring does not ensure personal safety (https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/central-north-island/places/tongariro-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/tongariro-northern-circuit/, checked 2026-08-24).
  • Whakapapa Village to Mangatepopo Hut is closed after the 2025 Tongariro fire and is not available for the 2026/27 Great Walk season. DOC shortens the walk to 35.5 km and recommends starting at Mangatepopo car park (same DOC page, checked 2026-08-24). This is a status/closure datum, not a change to the Great Walk grade.
  • Active volcanic terrain: the Crossing passes through volcanic hazard zones — even when the track is open, volcanic risk is present. Te Maari, Red Crater and Ngāuruhoe have been active within the last 100 years; Te Maari erupted in 2012. Monitoring does not ensure personal safety (https://www.doc.govt.nz/parks-and-recreation/places-to-go/central-north-island/places/tongariro-national-park/things-to-do/tracks/tongariro-alpine-crossing/, checked 2026-08-25).
  • Tongariro fires 2025: two fires burned significant areas around the start of the Crossing. Hapū Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro have placed a 10-year restorative rāhui over the affected area — stay on the tracks (same page, checked 2026-08-25).

Tongariro fire closure

Whakapapa Village to Mangatepopo Hut is closed after the 2025 Tongariro fire and is not available for the 2026/27 Great Walk season. DOC shortens the walk to 35.5 km and recommends starting at Mangatepopo car park (same DOC page, checked 2026-08-24). This is a status/closure datum, not a change to the Great Walk grade.

Tongariro fires 2025: two fires burned significant areas around the start of the Crossing. Hapū Ngāti Hikairo ki Tongariro have placed a 10-year restorative rāhui over the affected area — stay on the tracks (same page, checked 2026-08-25).

Which suits you

Match the record to the walk you can actually do — not a preference ranking. Kepler and the Tongariro Northern Circuit are loops; Milford, Routeburn, and the Alpine Crossing are one-way. The Crossing is the only day-hike in this set (no DOC hut booking; shuttle logistics). The Fiordland three are alpine weather walks; Tongariro adds volcanic ground and the 2025-fire / rāhui conditions on those records.
