How to read an elevation profile

An elevation profile is the stored line's height samples in order. The high point is the highest sample, the low point the lowest, and ascent is the sum of the rises. A landmark elevation printed by a park is a different number unless the record says they are the same. Read the source label on the trail page before treating a sample as a summit.

Distance on the profile is along the stored line, not a road distance and not a park brochure unless the record says the two agree. A coarse or schematic line is labelled. Do not treat it as a GPS track.
