Trekking without a tent
The European refuge and the Japanese ryokan are different overnight systems. This page uses three records we hold: Tour du Mont Blanc, Alta Via 1, and Kumano Kodo — Nakahechi (Takijiri to Hongū). Not a ranking, and not a list of walks we do not hold.

Alpine club huts and Japanese minshuku/ryokan both let you walk without a tent. The booking model, bedding rule, and luggage culture are not interchangeable. Booking detail for the European hut corridors is also on how hut-to-hut booking works. This page does not quote overnight prices.
Alpine model — shared dormitories
Tour du Mont Blanc is a three-country loop filed under France. Association member huts, rooms, and hotels are bookable on the Autour du Mont Blanc site. Huts that are not association members are contacted separately — the portal is not the entire corridor.autourdumontblanc.com · 2026-08-25
Hut reality on this record: Sheet sleeping bag (liner) obligatory for hygiene — association hut listing.autourdumontblanc.com · 2026-08-25
Alta Via 1 (Italy) has no central booking authority. CAI and private rifugi are booked one by one. The CAI guest regulation (checked 2026-08-25) makes a personal sleeping-bag liner (sacco lenzuolo) obligatory and requires mountaineering boots off inside the hut.cai.it · 2026-08-25
Hut reality on this record: Personal sleeping-bag liner (sacco lenzuolo) is obligatory in CAI rifugi; ask the warden if you do not have one.
Pilgrimage model — minshuku and ryokan
Kumano Kodo — Nakahechi (Takijiri to Hongū) (Japan) is village-to-village lodging on the Nakahechi, not a mountain-hut network. Tanabe City Kumano Tourism lists lodging across the peninsula and notes that camping is frowned upon outside official camping areas: the route is an ancient pilgrimage with sacred sites, and much of the mountains is privately owned. Named campsites: Chikatsuyu, Kawayu Onsen, Wataze Onsen, and Koguchi. No open campfires.tb-kumano.jp · 2026-08-25tb-kumano.jp · 2026-08-25
Daily luggage shuttle: Tanabe City describes forwarding bags between accommodations booked through KUMANO TRAVEL so walkers carry a day pack. Book at least 20 days in advance; last-minute onsite daily shuttle is not offered. Next-day or later shipping (Yamato TA-Q-BIN, Japan Post Yu-Pack) can be arranged without that advance window. Confirm current conditions on the official page. This desk does not quote yen amounts.tb-kumano.jp · 2026-08-25
Onsen towns sit on the Nakahechi lodging list (Kawayu, Yunomine, Watarase). Follow each bath’s posted house rules; this desk does not invent a generic onsen statute.tb-kumano.jp · 2026-08-25

Questions
Is there a central booking site for Alta Via 1?
No. Rifugi (CAI and private) are booked individually. This catalog left the walking-permit field Unverified because no central trail authority was found. The hut-to-hut booking guide states the same.
Can I camp on the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi?
Tanabe City Kumano Tourism (tips page, checked 2026-08-25) says camping is frowned upon outside official camping areas because the route is an ancient pilgrimage with sacred sites and much of the mountains is privately owned. Named campsites exist at Chikatsuyu, Kawayu Onsen, Wataze Onsen, and Koguchi. This is lodging logistics, not a walking permit.
How does Kumano luggage forwarding work?
Tanabe City describes a daily luggage shuttle between accommodations booked through KUMANO TRAVEL, with booking at least 20 days in advance, and next-day or later shipping via Yamato TA-Q-BIN or Japan Post Yu-Pack. Confirm current conditions and rates on the official luggage page. This desk does not quote shuttle prices.
